Begin by mapping out the exact path of your drain using high-visibility marking paint. Start at the highest point of your saturated yard and map the route to your discharge outlet (such as a dry well, a slope where it can drain to daylight, or a connection to a municipal storm drain if permitted).
Verify your slope using stakes, a tight string line, and a line level. Measure and mark your target depths at 10-foot intervals to ensure you maintain a steady downhill drop.
Using a shovel or a rented walk-behind trencher, excavate your trench along the painted line. For standard yard and surface drainage, a trench width of 12 inches and a depth of 18 to 24 inches is ideal.

CRITICAL STEP: Ensure the holes in the perforated pipe are facing down (specifically at the 4 o’clock and 8 o’clock positions). A common mistake is placing the holes facing up, which requires the water level in the trench to rise completely to the top of the pipe before it can drain. Placing the holes down allows rising groundwater to enter the pipe from below and drain away immediately.
Pour more washed round gravel over the pipe, filling the trench until the gravel is approximately 4 to 6 inches below the ground surface.
Once the gravel is in place, pull the excess flaps of geotextile fabric from the sides of the trench and fold them over the top of the gravel, overlapping them by at least 6 inches. This completely seals the gravel and pipe inside a protective fabric sleeve, keeping dirt, roots, and silt out.
Cover the wrapped fabric with a layer of coarse sand or topsoil to fill the remaining 4 to 6 inches of the trench. Gently tamp the soil down to prevent future settling, leaving a very slight mound at the surface to account for natural compaction.
